The WIOGI project aims to strengthen cooperation amongst relevant actors at the regional and local levels for the protection and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity in the WIO region. The project catalyzes the participation of a wide diversity of stakeholders to meet regional needs while achieving local impact. It has been designed to be highly participatory as well as conflict and gender sensitive.

WIOGI is well aligned with the objectives, priorities, and work programme of the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, maximizing synergies between the project and ongoing programmes in the region. To enhance the focus on learning and sharing, collective leadership and inclusiveness, WIOGI has formed a strategic partnership with the Collective Leadership Institute, improving the quality of participation and collaboration, while strengthening long-term capacity for collective implementation.
