Welcome to COP11 of the Nairobi Convention

The Eleventh Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Nairobi Convention (COP11) is crucial in enhancing ongoing efforts to safeguard the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) region. COP 11 will serve as a platform for reflection, collaboration, and decisive action for the Nairobi Convention Contracting Parties.

Dates and Segments

This year, COP11 will take place in two segments. On the 20th and 21st of August 2024, Experts, Partners, and national Focal Points will be deliberating and strategizing on proposed Decision areas. On the 22nd of August 2024, the Heads of Delegation meeting will take center stage, where Contracting Parties will convene to evaluate the implementation of the Convention’s Programme of Work 2022–2024 and chart the course for 2025–2028.
 

Agenda Highlights

COP11's key agenda  items include discussions on ratification and implementation of protocols, establishment of a regional water quality monitoring framework, negotiations for amending protocols concerning protected areas and wild fauna and flora, the development of a regional ocean governance strategy, project implementation and capacity building, regional marine spatial planning, ecosystem monitoring frameworks, and strengthening science-policy dialogue and partnerships. Additionally, there will also be deliberations on enhancing the operational functioning of the Secretariat.
 
These agenda items collectively reflect COP11's commitment to addressing pressing environmental challenges and fostering sustainable ocean governance in the Western Indian Ocean region.
